Detention and Retention Basins
Detention basins and retention ponds are crucial for collecting runoff from heavy rain in our increasingly developed neighborhoods. Well designed and efficient basins prevent flooding and erosion, and keep standing water out of parking lots and streets, making them safer for those using them.
Rely on Len’s Excavating to repair and maintain detention basins and retention ponds in your city and adjacent to your business or neighborhood. We ensure that city and county requirements are met through annual or biannual inspections, as needed.

Retention pond repair and maintenance
A retention pond is an artificial lake that collects and holds water runoff from the surrounding area. An orifice situated near the top of the pond allows water to be diverted when runoff is heavy enough to overflow the pond. Vegetation around and at the base of the pond provides for natural treatment of water in the pond to prevent algae and insect infestation.
Our maintenance program provides the following:
Regular mowing of surrounding grass
Occasional aerating to encourage absorption
Trimming of vegetation, native plants and wetland plants at edges
Water testing and drainage evaluation
Mosquito control
Debris and trash cleanup to prevent clogging
Our repair program may include:
Ground prep and replanting of vegetation and wetland plants
Ground prep, rebuilding and reseeding of eroded areas
Replace or repair drainage orifice and pipes
Detention basin repair and maintenance
Detention basins are dry basins that collect storm water runoff and drain it off over a safe period of time to prevent overwhelming sewer systems. An orifice situated near the bottom of the basin allows water to drain completely. The basin usually is constructed of both concrete and grass, allowing for absorption.
Our maintenance program provides the following:
Regular mowing of surrounding grass
Occasional aerating to encourage absorption
Debris and trash cleanup to prevent clogging
Inspection and removal of sediment collecting in discharge and drain pipes
Our repair program may include:
Stabilizing eroding banks and reseeding
Repair concrete that has cracked or crumbled
Excavate near inlets to remove excessive sediment
Replace or repair outlets, inlets and pipes
The efficient functioning of your detention or retention basins is our goal. Our inspections include a review of soil conditions around your basin to identify gullies and prevent erosion and compaction, as well as an inspection of equipment that keeps water filtering and draining.
